The Drum Program at Musicians Institute is pleased to announce that funk and rock drummer Christian Kongawi from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada has been named the winner of the prestigious Evans Drumhead Scholarship for fall 2013.
Christian will focus on “growing my arsenal of rudiments, music styles and essentially expand my musical vocabulary in order to be the best player I can be” during his studies at MI.
Upon receiving his scholarship award, Christian acknowledged that he chose to study at MI because of “it’s reputation, I’ve met people who have attended, and they all gave raving reviews. Not only that, but it is centrally located in one of the meccas of the entertainment industry”.
His future goals include “being a session player, or a “hired gun”. I live to perform, so I plan on touring and recording extensively. Building a reputation as a “go to drummer” is important to me, so that one day, if someone like Justin Timberlake needs a drummer, I’d like to be at the very least on the short list for such opportunities”.
Everyone at MI congratulates Christian on this achievement, which marks a great beginning to his studies. We look forward to seeing him reach his full potential while at MI.
Special thanks to our longtime industry partner, Evans Drumheads and The D’Addario Music Foundation for generously sponsoring this scholarship, which helps to provide talented students like Christian with the support, tools and recognition they need to launch successful and creative careers in the music industry.
