During this last weekend, we had the chance to hear some of MI’s great alumni making their mark at SXSW. Here’s three of our favorites!
Lissie (IAP 2004) absolutely wowed the crowds at SXSW during her five powerful shows (Radio Day Stage @Austin Conv. Ctr., Stubbs, Paste Stages on Sixth, South by San Jose and Perez Hilton’s party at Austin City Limits Moody Theater).
Since graduating MI, Lissie was named as Paste magazine’s Best New Solo Artist of 2010, has had dozens of her original songs placed in TV and film, been touring and performing around the world, a successful debut album and a terrific new album soon to be released in 2013.
Blues and rock guitar powerhouse Jared James Nichols (Guitar 2011) was spotted “blowing the roof off” at two Swinghouse/Hype showcases, The Gibson Room at Maggie Mae’s and showcasing for Sony/Hype at The Six Lounge.
Jared has opened and shared the stage with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Derek Trucks, and Honeyboy Edwards, and he is currently touring the Southwest with his band. Jared was also the winner of The Musicians Foundation 2010 Jerry Horton Schecter guitar scholarship and the 2011 Les Paul Tribute Contest as well as graduating as the MI “Outstanding Guitarist” for 2011.
Gaby Moreno (Vocal 2001) charmed the crowd during her two very well received showcases at SXSW this year (sung entirely in Spanish) at the Central Pres. church and Karma Lounge in support of her first Spanish-language album (to be released next week) “Postales. Originally from Guatemala, she was winner of the John Lennon songwriting competition, and has toured with Tracy Chapman and Ani di Franco since graduating MI. She also received an Emmy nomination in 2010 for co-writing the show title track for NBC’s “Parks & Recreation”, previously released three albums and continues to tour the world.
