Since her 2004 recording debut, jazz vocalist Tessa Souter’s gorgeous voice, and penchant for exploring strikingly beautiful music mostly untouched by other vocalists, has set her apart as “one of the few exceptional standouts in the crowded field of female jazz singers.” [Los Angeles Times] “Singers like her don’t come along every day.” [Chicago Examiner] “Broadly imaginative” [New York Times], “direct and soulful” [Village Voice], she is wowing audiences from the Philharmonic halls of Russia – four sell out national tours – to the jazz clubs of Manhattan with her emotional depth, striking authenticity, charismatic stage presence and crackling humor. With three critically acclaimed albums already behind her, Souter has now released ‘Beyond the Blue’, her second on the Motéma label, which is being lauded as her breakout CD.”Scintillating” [Boston Globe], “startlingly fresh” [Washington City Paper], the album features Souter’s own haunting and evocative lyrics, set to jazz arrangements of classical melodies from the European canon.

The Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood Throws MI Scholarship Launch Party for Hollywood High School Seniors!

On Wednesday Nov. 7th, in celebration of the power of music, education, and our community; The Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood pulled out all the stops to sponsor a top-shelf party at the HRC that featured four incredible Hollywood High and L.A.C.E.R. Afterschool Programs student bands.

The talents of the student bands spanned multiple genres from Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, The HHS Marching Band, R&B, and beyond, with several Musicians Institute alumni also joining in to participate in the performances.  MI and HRC staff alike found they were tremendously impressed by the genuine talent, passion and dedication that both the students and teachers at Hollywood High and L.A.C.E.R. Afterschool Programs displayed.

The high energy event was the official launch party for an extraordinary music scholarship funded by the Hard Rock for a current, talented senior to attend Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music in fall 2013.

The afternoon’s inspiration and excitement was enhanced by the Hard Rock’s generous supply of delicious appetizers, snacks and drinks for the 150+ students who attended the event.  Thank you Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood!

Hooray for Hollywood!

The Jazz Bakery at Musicians Institute Concert Series Presents: Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio Nov. 18th

The Jazz Bakery at MI Concert Hall Presents:

DAFNIS PRIETO

PROVERB TRIO

Sunday, Nov. 18th

One Show – 8pm

______

Dafnis Prieto – drums

Kokayi – vocals, poetry

Jason Lindner  keyboards

“A phenomenal drummer… he is clearly pushing the Afro-Cuban jazz language into new territory.” Variety

“The drummer Dafnis Prieto stands out for his energy, his creativity and, perhaps most of all, his borderless musical worldview.”  –The New York Times

Since making its debut at the Whitney Museum in early 2009, the Proverb Trio has deepened its rapport and honed its sound in a series of New York club appearances and on a tour of the Western US. The entirely improvised interactions of Dafnis Prieto’s virtuosic and dynamic drumming, Kokayi’s rapid-fire rapping and soulful singing, and Jason Lindner’s harmonic sophistication and daring pianistic sound explorations yield exhilarating results. Because the group creates advanced compositional structures on the spot, the music is full of surprises and takes a different, explosive shape every night, but always with the Proverb Trio’s distinct personality and engaging spirit.
