The Musicians Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of an exciting new scholarship to be awarded to a newly enrolling student in the Bass Program at Musicians Institute for Fall 2013.

The winner of the GHS Strings Bass Scholarship should be able to express outstanding tone/sound and musicianship. The scholarship award of $1,000 will be applied as a tuition discount for the Fall 2013 quarter.

Musicians Institute Mayhem Independent Artist Scholarship

Musicians Institute has partnered with Mayhem Festival to create the Rockstar Mayhem Independent Artist Scholarship as well as sponsor a stage on the 2013 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour.

The scholarship is available to anyone with a high school diploma (or equivalent) who is not currently enrolled at Musicians Institute. The scholarship award fully covers tuition and material fees for a two-quarter (approx. 6 month) Independent Artist Program at MI,  (room, board and travel are not included).

The scholarship application period closes on June 1, 2013.  Applicants must visit www.mi.edu/mayhem-rock-festival-scholarship to enter to win.  One applicant will be picked each week for the duration of the contest; one winner will be chosen by a jury of Musicians Institute instructors and announced on the last date of the tour.

The legendary Q was in the house at Musicians Institute this week, as he presented the astonishingly talented 11 year old piano prodigy and composer Emily Bear as a part of the long-running Jazz Bakery Moveable Feast at MI concert series.  The concert was billed as the “LA area CD release party” for Emily’s new release “Diversity”–which was produced by Quincy on Concord/Qwest Records.

The excitement and celebratory spirit of the evening was electric from the moment Emily and her band took the stage until the very last note of a 60 minute set (for the audience of 300+) that showcased Emily’s talent which Quincy described as: “the ability to seamlessly move from Classical to Jazz and Be-Bop, she’s astounding, man … she’s astounding.  She plays like she’s 40 years old…  there are no limits to the musical heights she can reach”.

Emily was accompanied by Peter Slavov (Bass), and Kevin Kanner (Drums), and Zuill Bailey (Cello) beautifully displaying her creative versatility as a composer, stunning melodic deftness and spectacular piano skills.

…we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this very bright light!

The spring 2013 Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation Vocal Scholarship at Musicians Institute has been awarded to Barbara Brook-Gutierrez.

Barbara (who was born in Mexico, and now lives in Los Angeles) enters the Associate of Arts in Performance (Vocal) program at MI having clearly articulated her career goals of making a living as a professional singer in the required written essay for the HCCCF scholarship award.

Barbara is very comfortable singing in multiple musical styles and (after winning a vocal contest at the age of 8), Barbara was getting paid gigs by the age of 12, performing with various bands and doing jingles for local radio. 

She chose to attend Musicians Institute “because I know it is a good school, and while I’m here I want to know how to read music”.

Barbara will receive a complete MI Vocal Program equipment package award:

Shikhar Gupta with his new ESP guitar

Musicians Institute is pleased to announce that Shikhar Gupta is the recipient of the spring 2013 ESP Guitar Scholarship. Shikhar comes to MI’s Guitar Program from India already in possession of very solid classic rock and blues guitar skills in addition to his talents as a songwriter.

While studying at MI, he plans to gain “live experience and to jam with fellow students”.  He adds, “my musical dreams and goals are to write good music that I can look back upon in later years with a sense of fulfillment”.

Everyone at MI congratulates Shikhar on winning this prestigious scholarship award, and we welcome him as he begins his studies and the many great experiences ahead at MI!

The spring 2013 Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation Vocal Scholarship at Musicians Institute has been awarded to Kalynne Schoelen.

A native of Red Bluff, California, Kalynne enters the Associate of Arts in Performance (Vocal) program at MI having clearly articulated her career goals of being a successful musician/singer in the required written essay for the HCCCF scholarship award.

She has been singing since the age of 8 and is most comfortable singing in the pop music genre.  Kalynne shared that she “hopes to learn the skills to become an overall great musician. I will work on my craft and strive to do my very best every day. I also want to build confidence in myself and in my music.”

She chose to attend Musicians Institute “because this school has everything I will need to succeed. Great teachers, great exposure to the industry and an endless supply of musical information at every corner. My dream is be a successful musician/singer. I ultimately want to make a living by doing what I love: making music.”

Jonathan Pennington with Andrea Calderwood (Vocal Program Chair)

The winner of the MI 35^th Anniversary Vocal Scholarship for spring 2013 is Kansas City, MO native Jonathan Pennington (who specializes in R&B and Pop) and comes to Musicians Institute  having sung and played piano and violin since his early childhood.

Upon learning about his award, Jonathan explains that he chose to study at MI because “I hope to learn the essentials for becoming a professional performer”. 

He adds “My dream is to become a well renowned singer/songwriter, performer/arranger in mainstream music.  I want to be in the place where my music can be heard by the common man, and then begin to incorporate the innovative musical ideas that abound in me”.

Everyone at MI congratulates Jonathan on this achievement, which marks a great beginning to his studies. We look forward to seeing him reach his full potential while at MI.
